No More Room in Hell 2 is built around online co-op for up to 8 players. You can queue with a pre-made squad of friends, fill the remaining slots with matchmade players, and — since the 1.0 release on August 11, 2026 — mix platforms freely thanks to full crossplay.
The basics
- Squad size: runs support up to 8 survivors. You don't need a full 8 stack to start — matchmaking can fill remaining slots.
- Crossplay: Steam, Epic Games Store, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S players can all play together. See the crossplay guide for details.
- Voice: the game uses proximity-based voice chat — you hear survivors who are near you in the world, which is both a coordination tool and a horror mechanic. Zombies react to noise, so treat your microphone like a flashlight: useful, and dangerous.
- Stakes are shared: infection can be hidden, ammo is communal in practice, and one careless player can end a whole run. Communicate.
Playing with strangers works, but NMRIH2 is dramatically better with a regular squad. The official Discord (discord.gg/nmrih) has an LFG community for finding groups.
Survival mode and weekly missions
The 1.0 update added an 8-player Survival mode — holding out against waves of zombies — alongside the objective-based missions, plus weekly missions that rotate. If your squad wants a shorter, more repeatable session than a full mission run, Survival mode is the pick.
"Failed to join squad" and other matchmaking issues
Squad-join errors were a known player complaint during Early Access, and launch weeks always stress matchmaking. If you hit "failed to join squad" or get stuck waiting for a match, work through the generic fixes first:
- Have the whole squad restart the game client, then re-form the squad from scratch.
- Verify game files (Steam: Properties → Installed Files → Verify).
- Check whether it's server-side: the official Discord and the Steam discussions light up fast when matchmaking is down for everyone.
- If only one platform mix fails (e.g. console + PC squads), test a same-platform squad to isolate it, and report the combination in the official Discord.
These are general troubleshooting steps, not official fixes — for outage news and known issues, the official Discord and Steam patch notes are the sources of truth.
Up to 8 players online. Smaller squads work too — matchmaking can fill the rest, or you can run under-strength.
Yes — full crossplay across Steam, Epic, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S shipped with 1.0 on August 11, 2026.
No PvP mode has been announced — NMRIH2 is a co-op (PvE) game. The threat is the horde and your own infection, not other players.
